Urban Agriculture

Urban agriculture refers to the production of food within or on the fringe of cities. Growing food can be done from windowsills to walls, rooftops to backyards, community gardens to urban farms. Expanding opportunities for urban agriculture can help New York City reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, improve the nutrition and health of city residents through greater food education and healthy food access, and provide green jobs for those who grow, harvest, process and sell food.

The Urban Agriculture Action Group is working to

  • Ensure community gardens are permanently protected
  • Conduct assessment of urban agriculture land availability in all 5 boroughs
  • Create an authorization process to facilitate the development of rooftop agricultural greenhouses
